Dumpling
Redemption

The night before, I got dumplings alone and watched a couple fall apart at the next table. The night after, I went to get dumplings again with my cousin.

Some nights make you think. Some nights make you think harder. This one did both.

I — The
Night
Before

Chinatown · solo · dumplings and a stranger's argument
Fig.01The morning after Hartford. Thinking about the parts of the night I don't remember. What scared me wasn't that I drank — it was losing awareness of my own actions. That felt like losing part of myself.

I went to get dumplings alone that night. At the next table, a couple was fighting. The man was out of control. What hurt more was watching the woman blame herself.

Fig.02Green dumplings on a banana leaf. Chinatown. The dumplings were perfect.

I don't think alcohol is automatically bad. I drank last night and it was fine. The difference is whether I'm still making conscious choices — or whether something else is making them for me.

More than anything, I value my independence. I want to trust myself. Stay aware. Build a life where I have the freedom to leave unhealthy situations instead of feeling trapped by them.

Neel · second dumplings · better company this time

This experience hasn't made me panic. It's made me more determined.

Fig.03Neel. My cousin. He came for dumplings. No drama this time — just good company and a second chance at Chinatown.

2nd Ave platform · cousins · brother · the ride
Fig.04My cousins and my brother. 2nd Ave platform, late. Day 1 of this particular era — Rahul is on his best behavior. Day 2 he would go home early. We'd find him butt-up, passed out on his phone. He just wanted to go home.
Fig.052nd Ave. Late enough that the platform is empty. Checking the train timer. Thinking about nothing in particular, which is its own kind of thinking.
Fig.06Someone driving. Windows down. Night road. Going home intentionally — that's the whole point.

I want to take responsibility for my choices, learn from them, and live intentionally rather than letting circumstances take over. The dumplings helped.
